Winter Time in Ticino
The winter season in Ticino, the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland, promises not only an idyllic setting, but also a unique blend of cultural charm and natural beauty. The journey took me through the enchanting cities of Lugano and Locarno, where I was able to experience the magic of “Christmas is in the air” at first hand. From the festive lights of Lugano to relaxing hours at the Termali Salini & Spa in Locarno and culinary delights in the charming restaurants – this trip was an adventure through the winter charm of Ticino, which I would now like to share with you in this blog post. Immerse yourself in the festive atmosphere, the culinary delights and the impressive sights that this region has to offer.
Hotel Bigatt, Lugano
The journey began with a scenic walk from Lugano to Pazzallo, where the charming Hotel Bigatt became our home for the coming days. With a stunning location in Paradiso and just a short walk from the shores of Lago di Lugano, Hotel Bigatt promised an enjoyable stay.
Lugano City Tour
The next morning began for us with a guided city tour under the motto “Christmas is in the air”. Under the festive lights, we explored the city, admired the magnificent Christmas tree and enjoyed the festive atmosphere of the city. The tour was organised by the regional tourist office of Lugano. Participation in the tour is free of charge, but it is necessary to book in advance

Relaxing in Locarno
In the afternoon, we travelled by train to Locarno and immersed ourselves in a world of relaxation at Termali Salini & Spa. The unique architecture of the wellness centre, located directly on Lake Maggiore, provided an impressive backdrop. The vertical arrangement of the baths and the panoramic view from the exclusive spa rooms on the top floor made for an unforgettable experience.

Dinner at Restaurant BLU
The evening in Locarno was rounded off with dinner at the BLU Restaurant & Lounge. As the restaurant was located right next to the Termali Salini, we only had to stumble out of the dressing room. The culinary delights and the atmosphere of the restaurant created a perfect end to the day.

Street Art Tour Lugano
After checking out of the hotel, we explored the street art tour in Lugano on our own. Colourful works of art are spread across 29 buildings throughout Lugano. The individual artistic objects can be easily viewed on foot.

Lunch at Agua, Lugano
At lunchtime, our journey took us back to the vibrant heart of Lugano, where the Agua restaurant opened its doors for us. Located directly on the lake promenade, it offers a spectacular view of the water. The restaurant skilfully combines traditional Ticino cuisine with modern elements, and the menu surprises with a variety of fresh, regional ingredients.

Natale in Piazza
The highlight of my trip through Ticino was undoubtedly my visit to the “Natale in Piazza” Christmas market in the Piazza della Riforma in Lugano, which lasts throughout December until the beginning of January, transforming the central square into a winter wonderland. The traditionally decorated tree formed the centrepiece, surrounded by atmospheric Christmas markets, gastronomic delicacies and a festive entertainment programme. The Ciani Park, bathed in magical light, was home to the enchanting Magic Forest, which surprised visitors with hidden light creations. The festive atmosphere, accompanied by live music and digital initiatives, created an unforgettable Christmas atmosphere. The Christmas market in Lugano was not only a place of enjoyment and entertainment, but also a reflection of the warm festivity that pervades Ticino in the run-up to Christmas.
